I realize we need other revenue streams. I am a professional, college educated woman who has succeeded in
obtaining a degree in Family Studies and more recently, a Masters Degree in Business Management. I have
always been driven to succeed and passionate about meeting needs of underserved communities throughout
my career. Deep inside, I am swelling with ideas to address social ills in my community. I've had a business
idea for three years that an investor was interested in, but my entrepreneurial spirit, my knowledge and my
experiences are not enough. I need finances. Right now, my hands are tied behind my back because I am
stifled with financial issues and unable to save enough money to begin my business, let alone to pay for
basic needs of our family. I cannot pay for support services that will enable me to cultivate other revenue
streams. I have the talent, the education, the drive, but not the resources. I am representing my family,
who means the most to me. I am fighting because I want my marriage to endure and for my children to
thrive in a household that is supportive and nurturing. At the same time, I am not doing well and need
support. The stress of the financial difficulties are causing me to feel despair, when typically, I am a
fighter. It is tough when I am doing everything I can think of, but seem to constantly fall short or am
reminded that my efforts are not good enough. The trade off is that I live in an apartment building that
doesn't have the space necessary for my children thrive and grow. I do not have the down payment and
am not deemed credit worthy. Without financial help, I will not be able to accumulate a down payment to
become a home owner. On the other hand, because of my income, I am ineligible for childcare assistance,
emergency state grants, energy assistance, and even a low interest work assistance loan-all that I've sought.
Two weeks ago, I had to resort to the highest interest predatory loans to help with basic needs, such as
food and the needs of my children. Now that summer is approaching, I have no resources to pay for my
children to attend camp. I am struggling to keep my job, a good job, college scholarships, because of my
inability to maintain care for my children and transportation issues. My extended family is not very
supportive and my husband has no family for us to reach out to for help.
